HORNBILL FESTIVAL WITH NORTHEAST TRIBES

Introduction

A festival known as the “Festivals of Festival”, the Hornbill festival is celebrated in the first week of December every year. The tribes inhabiting the state relate their lifestyle and many other activities to their religious and mythical belief and thus this festival is considered as a sacred festival so there is a huge participation from all the major tribes. Named after the bird Indian Hornbill, this festival was first organized in year 2000 by the Nagaland Government to promote the tourism and the cultural heritage of Nagaland. A blend of rare and rich cultural feast can be enjoyed one roof during this festival.It is the best opportunity to understand the people and culture of Nagaland, to experience the food, songs, dances and customs of Nagaland. Major highlights of the festival are the exhibition and sale of arts and crafts, cultural medley and other musical and dance performances, completely oriented toward their rich culture and showcasing their heritage. An unbeatable experience for one’s taste bud as you get to taste the very old and variety of exotic dishes prepared by the tribal’s of Nagaland. Beauty contests, Archery, wresting are some sport activities conducted during this festival so as said above this is a Festival of Festivals.

Day 01: Arrive Delhi

On your arrival at Delhi International airport, you shall be met by our officials who will transfer you to the hotel.

Day 02: In Delhi

Start your day with an exquisite breakfast in the hotel and let the excitement creep in. Proceed on with the day by taking a full day city tour covering both Old as well as New Delhi. Fascinate your hearts by enjoying a Metro and Auto ride while appreciating the magnificent architecture built by late emperor Shah Jahan in Old Delhi. It’s definitely worth spending at least half a day walking through the chaotic yet colourful streets of ChandniChowk and visiting India’s biggest and most famous mosque- Jama Masjid. Visit other monuments of the city including Humayun’s Tomb, Lotus Temple (Place of worship for the Bahai Community) and QutubMinar, which is also considered as a symbol of the City. Spend some time in Old Delhi to join the rest of the group and return to the hotel.

Day 03: Delhi-Dimapur-Kohima

A delicious breakfast at your hotel will be followed by departure for the airport so as to board a flight to Dimapur (Kohima). Once arrived at the Dimapur airport, after some rest we will follow a straight drive to Kohima while enjoying the scenic beauty of the roadside on your ride. Check in to a hotel where you spend the rest of your day relaxing yourself and enjoying the lovely climate and natural beauty of Kohima.

Day 04: Entire day to attend Hornbill Festival

After having a luscious breakfast we will drive you to Kisama (Hornbill Festival area), which is nearly12 KM from Kohima city. Arrive Kisama and witness the inaugural program and various musical, dancing and sports activities. We will drive you back to Kohima at evening and transfer to your hotel.

Day 05: Hornbill Festival

After breakfast drive to Kisama (Hornbill Festival area) and enjoy cultural & traditional shows from different states of North East India. Later visit War Museum, Flower show and Soveniour shops. Evening drive back to Kohima and transfer to your hotel.

Day 06: Kohima-Toupema-Mokokchung

Morning after breakfast drive to Mokokchung, enroute visit Toupema village.We are in the land of AngamiNagas – great warriors among Nagas. Visit village museum & small souvenir shop. Toupeme village is the place for Senkriyni Festival of Angamis, take place in the month of February every year. Continue drive to Mokokchung. Arrive and transfer to your hotel. Afternoon proceed for half day excursion to Ao country and visit Mopunchyukit Village to visit the Oldest church in North East India.

Day 07: Mokokchung-Mon

After breakfast, visit Ungma village, the biggest Ao village and looks like an adjunct of Mokokchung town.This village is many centuries old and can be of interest to people who have a desire to peep into Aofolklories, customs and traditions. Drive further to Mon, place of Konyak tribes (know as head hunters). Arrive Mon and transfer to your Guest House. Evening if time permits, visit Chui village.

Day 08: Mon-Longwa village-Mon

After breakfast visit Longwa Village bordering India and Burma. Situated about 40 km from the district headquarters of Mon. Longwa is one of the biggest villages in the district. Some portion of this village lies in India and some in Myanmar. However, it is controlled by a chief known as Angh. Half of the house of the chief falls in India and the other half in Myanmar. The lucky villagers have two citizenships, one from India and the other one from Burma. It is the place where coal mine was discovered in 1907. A visit to the village will acquaint you with the culture of the tribe. They are skilled in making exquisite handicrafts. Afternoon Visit Shangnyu village, this village is ruled by the Chief Angh is a prominent village in Mon district. There is a wonderful wooden monument measuring 8 feet in height and 12 feet in breadth- believed to be constructed by heavenly angels. Human beings and other creatures are carved on this monument. Memorial stones are also found in front of the Angh’s Palace. History records that good and friendly relationship existed between the Shangnyu and the Ahom Kings of Assam. ShangnyuAngh use to collect taxes from all the villages under his domain extending from Sibsagar in Assam to the Wanchos in Arunachal.

Day 09: Mon-Dibrugarh

Morning after leisurely breakfast drive to Dibrugarh (Assam). Arrive and transfer to your city hotel. Afternoon visit the local bazaar.

Day 10: Dibrugarh -Delhi

Morning after breakfast transfer to airport for your flight back to Delhi with connecting International flight to onward journey.
